Dear Donald,

For the past three months I have been presenting, on behalf of the College, a workshop to help chiropractors familiarize themselves with the implementation of the requirements related to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 or HIPAA.

In 30 plus years in chiropractic I have never seen an issue or situation about which the profession knew so little and an issue that loomed so large. I am asking for your help.

Every chiropractor, regardless of orientation, technique, practice style, level of computerization etc. needs to pay attention to this situation. This is NOT about people who do electronic billing it is a concern for every health care provider.

The College has developed a four-hour CE offering designed to help the DC complete their required familiarization with HIPAA, provide them with the understanding to develop a privacy notice for their office, to consider what authorizations are needed in their office and what procedural and policy related issues to which they need to attend. 

The CE offering is supported by a CD with over 3,000 pages of HIPAA related documents, resources and tools. It also includes a 120+ PowerPoint slide show for DCs to use in helping to train their staff about HIPAA compliance.

I am afraid that people are going to wake up to this need at the last minute and as a result wind up spending way more money than they need and being significantly more frustrated with the process than they need to be.
